Switching Spatial Reference Frames for Yaw and Pitch Navigation

چکیده
Humans demonstrate preferences to use egocentric or allocentric reference frames in navigation tasks that lack embodied (vestibular and/or proprioceptive) cues. Here, we investigated how reference frame proclivities affect spatial navigation in horizontal versus vertical planes. Point-to-origin performance after visually displayed vertical trajectories was surprisingly accurate and almost matched yaw performance for both egocentric and allocentric strategies. For vertical direction changes, 39% of participants unexpectedly switched to their non-preferred (allocentric) reference frame. This might be explained by vertical (25–90 up/downward pitched) trajectories having lower ecological validity and creating more pronounced visuo-vestibular conflicts, emphasizing individual differences in processing idiothetic, embodied sensory

Different strategies for spatial updating in yaw and pitch path integration
Research in spatial navigation revealed the existence of discrete strategies defined by the use of distinct reference frames during virtual path integration. The present study investigated the distribution of these navigation strategies as a function of gender, video gaming experience, and self-estimates of spatial navigation abilities in a population of 300 subjects. Participants watched video...
متن کاملNavigating in a virtual three-dimensional maze: how do egocentric and allocentric reference frames interact?
Spatial navigation in the presence of gravity restricts one's displacement to two-dimensional (2D) planes. Therefore, self-motion only includes translations and yaw rotations. In contrast, in weightlessness, one can translate and turn in any direction. In the first experiment, we compared the ability to memorize a virtual three-dimensional (3D) maze after passive exploration in three self-motio...
متن کاملApplications of Inertial Navigation Systems in Medical Engineering
Inertial navigation systems are of the most important and practical systems in determining the velocity, position and attitude of the vehicles and different equipment. In these systems, three accelerometers and three gyroscopes are used to measure linear accelerations and angular velocities of vehicles, respectively. By using the output of these sensors and special inertial algorithms in differ...
متن کاملNavigating in a Virtual 3D Maze: Body and Gravity, Two Possible Reference Frames for Perceiving and Memorizing
Although recent studies have brought new insight into the mechanisms of spatial memory and cognitive strategies during navigation, most of these studies have concerned two-dimensional navigation and little is known regarding the problem of three-dimensional (3D) spatial memory. We found previously that memorizing complex 3D-structured corridors was easier with natural self-motion that included ...
متن کاملAutonomous Flights Through Image-Defined Paths
This paper addresses the problem of autonomous quadrotor navigation through a previously-mapped indoor area. In particular, we focus on the case where a user walks through a building and collects images. Subsequently, a visual map of the area, represented as a graph of linked images, is constructed and used for automatically determining visual paths (i.e., sequences of images connecting the sta...
